An illustrator and designer since 1986, I received my BFA in Illustration from Parsons School of Design and my MFA in Printmaking from The State University of New York at New Paltz, which has wonderful printmaking facilities. I've also been teaching in the Illustration department at Parsons School of Design since 1991. WPA art, ephemera from the 20's, 30's and 40's, cubism, are all significant sources of inspiration for me both as an illustrator and designer.
Growing up, comic books were one of my first exposures to art as a profession and motivated me to start drawing. The sequential art in comic books lead me to other artists and illustrators that created bold graphic work and strong narratives. In school I discovered printmaker Lynd Ward's "stories without words", Frans Masareel's woodcut novels along with muralists Diego Rivera, and Thomas Hart Benton. There is a very strong connection between the larger than life visual narrative in murals and comic book panels, but I'll save that for my blog.
I've worked for a variety of clients as both an illustrator and designer: Newsday, Curbstone Press, The Boston Globe, M.I.T./Technology Review, McGraw Hill Publishing, The Washington Post, Random House Publishing, The Wall Street Journal, among others.
